An Armstrong County woman was identified by National Park officials as the victim who drowned at Glacier National Park on Sunday.
A news release from the National Park said that 26-year-old Gillian Tones of North Apollo slipped on some wet rocks and fell into Virginia Creek between St. Mary and Virginia Falls in the national park in Montana, and was quickly swept down the creek, going over a series of smaller waterfalls before being pinned underwater by a log near St. Mary’s falls. A few parkgoers were able to pull her out, but after several minutes of lifesaving efforts by first responders and parkgoers, she was pronounced dead Sunday evening.
Tones’ death is currently under investigation, and park officials say an autopsy is planned.
Tones was a graduate of the Apollo-Ridge High School in 2015 and was working as a travelling nurse.
