The Pirates couldn’t contain the Reds’ bats in the 4th inning, leading to a series-opening loss in Cincinnati last night. Here’s Joe Block.
Manager Derek Shelton says Bailey Falter lost his command in the disastrous 4th inning, and it cost him the game.
Shelton says his relief corps needs to be effective with the loss of David Bednar, who is on the 15-day injured list.
Shelton was happy that his guys didn’t quit, even loading the bases in the 9th inning before Nick Gonzalez struck out to end the game.
Tonight’s second game of the series features a great pitching matchup. Joe Block has a preview. The Pirates send right-hander Mitch Keller [8-4, 3.11 ERA] to the mound to face Reds righty Hunter Greene [5-2, 3.35 ERA]. It’s a 6:45 airtime, 7:10 first pitch from Great American Ballpark on WCCS.
A couple of Pirates injury notes:
- Dennis Santana was hit on his pitching arm by a Tyler Stephenson line drive in the 5th He was able to finish the inning but the arm swelled up in the dugout, and he left the game. He was diagnosed with a right arm contusion and will be evaluated today.
- Pitcher Martín Perez is back with the Pirates after Saturday’s rehab start for Indianapolis. He will throw a bullpen session today and is expected to rejoin the rotation this weekend.
- Utility player Ji Hwan Bae was activated from the injured list and optioned to Indianapolis.
