Pennsylvania’s unemployment rate remained unchanged over the month of May.
According to the state Department of Labor and Industry, the rate of unemployment remained at 3.4 percent for the month. This marks the eighth consecutive month the statewide rate has been at that level. By comparison, the federal unemployment rate went up by one-tenth of a percentage point to 4.0 percent. Over the last year, the state’s unemployment is one-tenth of a percentage point higher.
Pennsylvania’s Civilian Labor Force, which is the estimated number of people working or looking for work, went up 9,000 over the month to a record-high of 6,605,000 due to a growth in resident employment. The total number of non-farm jobs in the state was also up to a record high to 6,167,700, an increase of 19,800 jobs over the last month. Jobs increased from April in nine of the 11 industry super sectors. The largest movement over the month was a gain of 8,700 leisure & hospitality jobs. Education & health services reached its 12th consecutive record high.
County-wide figures are expected to be released later this week.
