Barring a trade, the Penguins are set in goal for the upcoming season, with the signing yesterday of Alex Ndeljkovic to a two-year contract. He will join fellow returnee Tristan Jarry between the pipes this season for coach Mike Sullivan. Ndeljkovic would have become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st.
The 28-year-old was 18-7-7 with a 2.97 goals-against average and a .902 save percentage in his first season with the Penguins. Ndeljkovic started the Penguins’ final 13 games and was 8-1-3 in their ill-fated push for the playoffs, which fell one point short.
Jarry was 19-25-6 with a 2.91 goals-against average and a .903 save percentage.
President of Hockey Operations /General Manager Kyle Dubas has options in goal. He could easily come back with the Jarry/Ndeljkovic tandem or promote rookie Joel Blomqvist from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, trading Jarry, who has four years left on his contract.
The Penguins have twelve players slated to become free agents on the first of July. Seven of them are unrestricted: forwards Jansen Harkins, Vinnie Hinostroza, and Radim Zohorna, and defensemen Ryan Shea, Taylor Fedun, Jack Rathbone, and Dmitri Samorukov.
