Bailey Falter was in trouble from the outset in the first inning and the bullpen stumbled as well as the Pirates dropped their series finale to the Dodgers. Here’s Joe Block.
Manager Derek Shelton says Falter rebounded after a rough start, but the Dodgers are tough.
Falter says you can’t afford to be off your game against the Dodgers.
Newly promoted from Indianapolis, Ben Heller got roughed up when he replaced Falter. Shelton had hoped for a better result.
The Pirates signed left-hander reliever Justin Bruihl and added him to the roster yesterday. He’s played for three Major League teams – the Dodgers, Rockies, and Reds – and was available after exercising an opt-out of his minor league contract with the Reds’ Louisville Triple-A team last Saturday. With Louisville, Bruihl was 4-0 with a 2.31 ERA in 19 relief appearances. He cited a lack of opportunity to advance to the Majors with the Reds as the reason for his opt-out.
The team made room for Bruihl on the roster by transferring reliever Ryan Borucki from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day list. In another move, starter Quinn Priester landed on the 15-day injured list yesterday with a right lat muscle injury in his back.
BUCS MINORS
If the Bucs were hoping Domingo German was ready to come back to the big leagues to replace Priester, they’re probably rethinking that…German gave up 8 runs on 9 hits in 5 innings for Indianapolis yesterday as the Indians lost, 23-5 to Columbus.
Altoona clubbed Richmond, 10-4, as Tsung-Che Cheng homered for the second straight day. Sammy Siani also hit a home run and drove in four runs. Seth Beer had 3 hits and Jase Bowen had 2. Braxton Ashcraft gave up 4 runs in 7 innings and got the win.
