UPDATE: Tucupita Marcano was officially banned for life from Major League baseball for violations of the league’s gambling policy. The announcement comes after a two-month investigation into several players violating the league’s rules on betting. Marcano received the lifetime suspension as he reportedly bet on Pirates games while he was playing for them last year, along with other baseball-related bets he placed.
It’s estimated that Marcano wagered over $150,000 across nearly 400 bets, while winning less than 5% of the bets he placed. Four other players, Oakland’s Michael Kelly and minor leaguers Jay Groome, Jose Rodriguez and Andrew Saalfrank also received one-year suspensions for violating the league’s gambling policy.
MLB policy permits players to bet on sports, but not on baseball. Betting on baseball can result in a one-year suspension. Betting on games in which your own team is involved will get you a lifetime ban from the sport.
