Ben Ryan and Ryan Okopal shut down Bellefonte as Indiana High blanked the reigning state champions, 3-0, yesterday in the PIAA state Quad-A playoffs. Jake Slebodnick has the story.
Pitching has been a real strength for Indiana this season, and coach Dan Petroff says his arms came through again.
Petroff says Indiana is a very good team stocked with great young men, and they’re primed to make a run at a state championship.
The coach knew that Bellefonte was still dangerous, even when they were down.
Petroff loves watching Andrew McGee play shortstop.
Ryan says his teammates stepped it up defensively.
Charlie Manzi knew Indiana had a chance to make some noise in the state playoffs.
McGee says the loss in the WPIAL championship game motivated his team to make a run in the state tournament.
Indiana will play East Pennsboro next, on Thursday in the state quarterfinals. Okopal says they’ll be ready.
The PIAA has not yet announced a site or time for Thursday’s game. Should they win, Indiana will play the winner between Montour and Fleetwood. Montour beat Erie Cathedral Prep, 5-2, while Fleetwood, the third-place team out of District 3, knocked off WPIAL champion North Catholic, 3-2.
WEST SHAMOKIN SOFTBALL
West Shamokin was knocked out of the PIAA AA softball playoffs with a 10-0 loss to Neshannock, which scored a run in the first, two in the third, another in the fourth, then put up five in the fifth. A lone run in the sixth ended the game an inning early. Madi Kearn had the only hit for the Wolves, a single.
