The NAACP of Indiana County has announced plans for their annual Juneteenth Celebration.
The commemorative cookout will be held June 19th from 3-8 PM at the pavilion at Mack Park. This year’s celebration will feature the dedication of a park bench in honor of Patti Holmes, who died in January of this year. Not only was she a local performer with the band Grist for the Mill, but she was also very active in the community, including serving as an officer and executive committee member with the county NAACP. Her bandmates will perform as part of the event. There will also be a new award for veterans presented, and the guest speaker will be Reverend Debra Mason. Mason has worked as a diversity and inclusion officer for Seton Hill University and for the YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh and is currently the pastor of Otterbein United Methodist Church in Greensburg.
The Juneteenth celebration is a recognition of the end of legalized slavery in America, with Texas being the last state to do so in 1865. The day became a federal holiday in 2021.
While the event is free, registration is needed to determine how many people will attend. Click the link below to register.
