Senator Joe Pittman is warning about the latest scam making the rounds. This one, he says, involves pop-ups and ads for a “free” scan to keep your computer safe, tricking people into paying to fix computer problems that might not exist. Some of the ads even come with a Windows logo.
Pittman even names two firms which have done it – Reimage and Restoro – which he says lied about finding security threats on people’s computers to convince them to pay tens of millions of dollars for software and services “to repair made-up problems”.
The senator advises people to never click a link or call a number in a pop-up warning. He says legitimate companies won’t contact you by phone, email, or text to tell you there’s a problem with your computer.
