The Steelers are getting encouraging signs from some of their new players as the second session of Organized Team Activities (OTAs) wrapped up yesterday at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex.
One of them is cornerback Donte Jackson, who was acquired from Carolina earlier in the offseason for Pro Bowl wide receiver Diontae Johnson. He’s been in Steelers camp over the last two weeks and is quickly becoming a positive factor in Teryl Austin’s gameplan.
Jackson met with the media following Thursday’s workout and said he’s fitting in well with the Steelers.
One of Jackson’s main tasks is mentoring second-year cornerback Joey Porter Jr., who is coming off a rookie season with 29 tackles and one interception.
Jackson said he’s excited to work with Porter and that his confidence will be a big factor moving forward.
A big part of OTAs is getting familiar with the NFL’s adjusted kickoff rules, which will see kicks start at the 20-yard line instead of the 35-yard line.
Special Teams captain Miles Killebrew said the team is zeroing in on understanding the new rules over the offseason.
Killebrew adds he expects a lot of big plays to be made now that kicks will be returnable.
The final session of OTAs gets underway on Monday.
