The Steelers opened their OTAs yesterday without Cam Heyward on the field, but with Russell Wilson, Justin Fields, and a number of other new players. Heyward is not participating in the voluntary workouts as he negotiates a contract extension. He’s entering the final year of his current deal. Wilson and Fields are part of the revamped quarterback room.
Coach Mike Tomlin was happy to get to work.
Tomlin is eager to see new quarterbacks Russell Wilson and Justin Fields work and compete against each other.
Wilson comes to Pittsburgh after two seasons in Denver. He is excited to be joining a historic NFL franchise.
Fields joins the Steelers after three seasons in Chicago. He says he is ready for a training camp competition with Wilson, but he’s also hoping to learn from the nine-time Pro Bowl quarterback.
Six months after suffering a major knee injury, linebacker Cole Holcomb was at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex, but he didn’t participate in the workout.
Cornerback Cory Trice worked out with a brace on his right knee as he continues his return from a torn ACL suffered August 2nd of last year in training camp.
The Steelers have signed four-year veteran running back Jonathan Ward, who is a special teams ace. He’s played 42 games in the NFL with the Cardinals and Titans.
And the team announced that the final preseason game this season will be at 1 PM on Saturday, August 24th, against the Lions in Detroit.
