Indiana County Magisterial District Judge Tony Sottile has been recertified as a member of the Pennsylvania Judiciary after successfully completing the required continuing education coursework. This recertification process is essential for all magisterial district judges in Pennsylvania to ensure they remain updated on legal practices and procedures.
The 32-hour instructional program, mandated by the Minor Judiciary Education Board (MJEB), covers a wide array of topics. This year’s curriculum included updates on the Pennsylvania Vehicle Code, Civil and Landlord-Tenant Law, procedures for identifying and reporting child abuse, truancy, criminal law, bail procedures, judicial ethics, and managing individuals with mental health conditions in court. Additional courses address autism spectrum disorder in the justice system, media relations, office security, intergovernmental relations, financial exploitation of elders, and more.
Participation in this program is a statutory requirement for over 500 magisterial district judges in Pennsylvania. The weeklong course involves both distance education and four days of in-person classes at the Pennsylvania Judicial Center in Harrisburg. Approximately 50 judges attend each session during the fall and spring terms, ensuring that they are well-prepared to adjudicate cases and manage their courts effectively.
