The 2nd annual Excellence in Education awards will be held tonight at the KCAC.
More than 500 attendees are expected for tonight’s banquet that will recognize 56 students and eight teachers from schools across Indiana County and the Indiana County Technology Center. Throughout the year, high school seniors have been honored have been nominated by teachers or school administrators for standing out in a positive manner based on criteria. Not only were academics considered, but also school and community involvement, essential skills, and growth and maturity. One student was chosen as a student of the month. An independent committee made up of individuals from the fields of education and human resources as well as community leaders then reviewed all of the nomination forms and chose one finalist from each school district as well as an overall winner of the award. The overall winner will receive a new car from the Colonial Family of Dealerships. A second car will also be awarded for the teacher of the year. The United Way will also award scholarships for the most philanthropic teacher and student.
This year, there will be two keynote speakers: Pennsylvania Lt. Governor Austin Davis and former Pittsburgh Penguin Tyler Kennedy.
Ceremonies start at 5:00 at the KCAC.
