State police have released their statistics for activity over Easter weekend.
Police say that during the three-day period that started on Friday, March 29th and ran through Sunday, Troopers across the state investigated 407 crashes that resulted in six fatalities and 90 people injured. While the number of crashes and the number of those injured were down slightly from last year, the number of fatalities increased across the state. Intoxication by drugs or alcohol was a factor in 46 of those crashes, two of which were fatal. 358 motorists were arrested for driving under the influence, and issued over 5,200 speeding tickets, 557 citations for not wearing a seatbelt, and 90 for not having a child in a safety seat.
State police broke down the statistics by Troop, and in Troop A, which covers most of Indiana and Westmoreland Counties, along with all of Cambria and Somerset Counties, troopers investigated 28 crashes. 10 people were injured in those crashes. Six of the crashes were related to alcohol. Troopers arrested 31 people for DUI, and handed out 422 speeding tickets, 35 seat belt citations, and five child safety seat violations. Police also initiated 31 criminal arrests.
