BASKETBALL
Indiana’s girls couldn’t overcome a very deep McKeesport team last night in the second round of the PIAA 5A playoffs at Gateway High School. Jake Slebodnick has the story. (McKeesport 48 Indiana 27)
Redbank Valley sprinted to a 19-6 lead in the first quarter and allowed just eight field goals in the game, stopping West Shamokin’s state playoff run, 54-21 at Armstrong High School. The Bulldogs had three players in double figures, led by Owen Clouse with 15, all of which he scored in the second half. Mason Clouse had 14 and Breckin Minich 12. West Shamokin was led by Alex Talmadge, with 8 points. The Wolves finish another fine season at 21-7.
Marion Center’s girls are the only area team still in the PIAA playoffs. The Stingers will play Marian Catholic tomorrow night at 7 o’clock at Bald Eagle Area. We’ll have the game on Cat Country 106.3 FM and we are tentatively scheduled to carry it on Renda Digital TV too.
HOCKEY
At the Island Sports Center at Robert Morris last night, Indiana’s season came to a disappointing end with a 2-1 loss to Chartiers Valley. Freshman sensation Noah Callender gave the Colts the lead at 15:59 of the first period, but Indiana’s Phil Bell answered with a penalty shot goal to open the second period to tie the game at 1. At 9:50 of the second period, Chartiers Valley’s Tyler Held scored a power play goal with an assist from Callender for the game-winner.
Luke Rowe made twenty saves for Indiana. Chartiers Valley’s Matthew Colberg stopped 27 of Indiana’s 28 shots.
Indiana’s season ends with a record of 16-4-1, including a 1-1 mark in the playoffs.
