The PIAA state basketball tournament gets underway tonight and we have two games on our Renda Media stations tonight.
District 6 Girls Double-A champion Marion Center will host WPIAL 8th place finisher Winchester Thurston on U92.5 FM and on Renda Digital TV. The Stingers are 20-5 and on a roll after knocking off state number-one ranked Bishop McCort in the district semis and second-seeded Portage in the title game. Winchester Thurston is 11-15 and lost in the WPIAL quarterfinals, and subsequently to Clairton and Fort Cherry in consolation rounds. Airtime is 6:30.
On Cat Country 106.3 FM tonight, River Valley plays WPIAL Triple-A champion Shady Side Academy at Avonworth High School. River Valley is 20-7 and the third team out of District 6. Shady Side Academy is 24-2. The airtime for the game is 5:40.
Also tonight, the Portage girls play Aliquippa at Portage.
Tomorrow, we have two games on the air. Indiana’s girls play a 5A game at District 3 York Suburban High School, airing at 3:30 on WDAD. Northern Cambria’s boys are the host team against District 10 Eisenhower, with the game played at Cambria Heights because of the limitations of the Northern Cambria gym. That one airs on Cat Country 106.3 FM at 2:40.
West Shamokin’s boys play at district 10 Cambridge Springs tomorrow afternoon.
WRESTLING
At the PIAA Wrestling championships, Indiana’s Nico Fanella pinned Brockway’s Weston Pickarsik in the second period yesterday, setting up a match today against United’s Gideon Bracken in the 127 pound weight class. Bracken defeated Tanner Berkenstock of Notre Dame High School, 14-8 and David Kennedy of Montoursville, 6-4.
At 121 pounds, United’s Josef Garchnick beat Faith Christian’s Gauge Botero 5-1 and lost toe McGuffey’s Emmett Wolfe, 8-3. Garshnick will wrestle in the consys today.
