The IUP basketball teams bow out of the PSAC playoffs, both with quarterfinal losses. The women fell to Cal U by three points, the men to Gannon by five. We start with Jack Benedict and the IUP men in Erie. (Gannon beats IUP, 94-89)
Coach Joe Lombardi says IUP didn’t get the job done on the boards.
Lombardi had often commented on how much he enjoys coaching this group, and they gave it everything they had last night.
The IUP men had won 13 consecutive PSAC playoff games before last night and were the four-time defending conference champions.
Ethan Porterfield scored 34 points in his 130th and final IUP game. He finishes in second place in career scoring in men’s basketball, fifteen points behind Daryl Webb. He is first in the IUP record book in career field goals made (723), fifth in three-point field goals (236), third in rebounding (885), second in blocks (165), and tied for third in career games (130).
At the KCAC last night, the IUP women had the lead in the fourth quarter but could not hold onto it, losing to Cal U for the second time in a week. Mark Bertig reports. (Cal U 57, IUP 54)
Coach Craig Carey describes the final, frantic seconds of the game.
While the men’s season comes to a close, Carey is hopeful the women can keep playing next week in the Atlantic Regional.
The Division II playoff brackets will be released Sunday night after conference tournaments wrap up.
