PennDOT, State Police and the PA Turnpike Commission have started a new enforcement effort involving speed cameras going up in work zones.
The Work Zone Speed Safety Camera program has been a success over the first five years of operation when it was a pilot program. It uses systems that are mounted on vehicles to detect and record motorists who are exceeding work zone speed limits by 11 miles an hour or more using electronic speed timing devices. Signs are posted outside the zones where the cameras are being used, and are only operational in work zones where workers are present. Vehicle owners will receive a warning letter on a first offense, then a $75 fine for a second offense, and a $150 fine for third and all subsequent offenses. No points will be assessed to a driver’s license with these penalties.
Over the five years of the pilot program, there was a 38% reduction in speeding in work zones, a 47% reduction in excessive speeding where it is 11 miles an hour or more and work zone crashes declined by 50% when a speed enforcement vehicle was present.
