The IUP men used solid defense and a PSAC Tournament vet to take care of Mercyhurst last night and set themselves for a Wednesday night game against top seeded Gannon. Jack Benedict has the recap.(69-54 win. Ethan Porterfield led the way with 29 points.)
Coach Joe Lombardi says IUP added an extra element to their formula last night.
Lombardi says it felt great that his seniors’ last game at the KCAC turned out the way it did, after Saturday’s loss to Clarion.
Ethan Porterfield’s tremendous run of postseason success continued last night. He’s won the last two PSAC Tournament MVPs and was the Atlantic Region Tournament MVP two years ago. AS Jack said, he needs 49 points to tie Darryl Webb for IUP’s all-time men’s basketball scoring record, 50 to have the mark all to himself.
Porterfield last week was named to the Small College Basketball Trevor Hudgins Top 15 Watch List. That’s a new award created in November to honor “the senior who has had the finest overall four-year career”, taking into account career stats and achievements, team achievements, awards, and personal character.
The other games in the PSAC men’s tournament last night included East Stroudsburg crushing Mansfield, 114-72, West Chester topping Shepherd, 76-66, and Slippery Rock edging Seton Hill, 71-69.
In the women’s bracket, Cal U downed Seton Hill, 70-65 to set up a Wednesday night game against IUP, which had a bye in the first round. Millersville got by East Stroudsburg, 59-52. Edinboro nipped Mercyhurst, 63-62 and Kutztown eliminated Mansfield, 66-48.
Wednesday’s IUP action has the Crimson Hawks’ women taking on Cal U at the KCAC at 6, airing on WCCS at 5:40, and the IUP men traveling to Gannon, on 92.5 FM U92 starting at 7:10.
