The regular season ended on Saturday for the IUP basketball teams and both are headed into the PSAC playoffs, with the men on the court tonight and the women enjoying two extra days of rest before hosting the winner of tonight’s game between Cal U and Seton Hill.
The IUP men will welcome Mercyhurst to the KCAC tonight for a first round game, with the winner to play at Gannon on Wednesday. IUP beat the Lakers 66-54 on January 10th but lost to them, 93-85 in double overtime on February 7th. Coach Joe Lombardi’s Crimson Hawks lost their last four games of the regular season.
Lombardi says they have an opportunity to play postseason basketball and they’re not worried about the past.
The other games in the men’s bracket tonight have East Stroudsburg at Mansfield in IUP’s top half of the bracket and in the lower half, Slippery Rock hosting Seton Hill and Shepherd at West Chester. Gannon, Millersville, Lock Haven, and Cal U have the other first round byes.
Besides Cal U and Seton Hill tonight, the other women’s games in the first round feature Millersville at East Stroudsburg in IUP’s half of the bracket, and in the other half, it’s Edinboro hosting Mercyhurst and Mansfield at Kutztown.
Women’s coach Craig Carey says they will use the two off days to prepare for Wednesday night.
The other teams with byes in the first round are Gannon, West Chester, and Lock Haven.
Tonight’s game airs on 92.5 FM U92 with the pregame starting at 6:45.
