The happiness continues amongst the Pirates roster on the signing of Mitch Kellar to a long-term contract. On Friday, the formal announcement of the contract signing was celebrated at LECOM Park in Bradenton. The contract for Kellar came after an extended conversation between the pitcher and chairman Bob Nutting on the practice field at the Pirates Training complex. The agreement was made on Thursday.
Even as the ink dries on that contract, many of the players say that closer David Bednar should get the next long-term extension. Last year, Bednar tied the national league with 39 saves and led the majors with a 92.9% save percentage.
Meanwhile, the Pirates are getting ready for the first spring training game of the season against Minnesota today in Fort Meyers. You can hear the game starting at 1:00 on WCCS.
