The most important development on the field at Pirates spring training yesterday in Bradenton may not have been on the mound or in the batter’s box. It may have been in the bullpen where Mitch Keller engaged in a half-hour conversation with Pirates owner Bob Nutting and team president Travis Williams. Keller is scheduled to earn more than $5.4 million this year but wants a long-term contract. Nutting had a similar talk with Brian Reynolds last year in spring training before signing the All-Star outfielder to a long-term deal.
A trade for Marlins starting pitcher Edward Cabrera still hasn’t happened for the Pirates, and there may be a good reason. Even though they love Cabrera, the price Miami reportedly has asked for is way too steep…several sources in Florida report they are asking for shortstop Oneil Cruz from the Bucs.
