The Pennsylvania Game Commission released its bear hunting statistics from 2023, and while the number of hunters grew again, the amount of bears harvested decreased from the year before.
In 2023, 206,124 bear hunters were accounted for in Pennsylvania, which marked the fourth-highest total ever, but only 2,920 bears were harvested. That number was down 250 from the year before, but officials with the Game Commission said that drop was expected after extended bear season was eliminated in five Wildlife Management Units (WMUs) across the state, especially in 2C which covers a slim portion of Indiana County.
Speaking of, Indiana County hunters harvested 24 bears in 2023 compared to 31 the year before. Across WMUs 2D, 2E, and 2C, approximately 274 bears were killed last year.
