The IUP basketball teams both beat UPJ at the KCAC last night, and both games featured some outstanding individual milestones. Jack Benedict has the story.(Women won, 69-63 . Men won, 77-55.)
Women’s coach Craig Carey says he’d rather “win ugly” than “lose pretty”, and that’s exactly what happened last night. He likes IUP’s position in the PSAC West.
Carey says ‘Shae Weaver is a very special player.
Men’s coach Joe Lombardi likes the way his team reacted to a tough week in which they lost two very close games.
Lombardi predicts Ethan Porterfield will join Darryl Webb “on the wall” at the KCAC, with his own banner. He says Porterfield has had to overcome a lot to become an IUP all-timer.
Porterfield scored a career high for the second straight game after he had 31 against Gannon on Saturday. He passed Cobo Diaz for second all-time in men’s basketball scoring at IUP, (1,769) and is only 180 points behind Darryl Webb on the all-time men’s career scoring list. He is also only one field goal behind Derrick Freeman for second all-time in field goals made, with 660.
Jahzinga Tracey is IUP’s all-time career basketball high scorer, with 2,101 points.
IUP plays at Edinboro on Saturday, with the women tipping off at 1 and the men to follow.
