The president of APSCUF told the State System of Higher Education Board of Governors last week that coaches at the state-owned universities are not being treated fairly in contract talks, and he questioned the behavior of the State System negotiators.
Dr. Kenneth Mash said the State System is not treating coaches with fundamental fairness, particularly on issues of job security. He pointed out that coaches must wait five years before being eligible for a rollover contract, and that negotiators have refused to budge on dismissals of coaches for “arbitrary or capricious” reasons, even insisting on language that allows them to be “discriminatory” in nonrenewal decision-making.
Further, Mash expressed disappointment in the attitude of the State System’s negotiators, saying, “It should not be OK to have your representatives bang on the table and announce that this will not change. It is just not right. It is not a good way to treat people.”
The coaches continue to work on terms of a contract that expired last June. Meanwhile, there has still been no announcement on completion of language in a tentative deal and subsequent vote on a new four-year faculty contract after an “agreement in principle” was reached last month.
