The Pirates officially welcomed reliever Aroldis Chapman to the roster after signing him to a one-year, $10.5 million contract. Outfielder Canaan Smith-Njigba was designated for assignment in order to open up a spot on the 40-man roster for Chapman, a seven-time All-Star who spent last year with Kansas City and with the world champion Texas Rangers.
The Bucs also signed 10-year veteran pitcher Wily Peralta to a minor-league deal with an invitation to spring training. He spent all of last year pitching in the minors, posting a 6.31 ERA with Rochester, the Washington Nationals’ triple-A team. Peralta last pitched in the big leagues with the Tigers in 2022.
