A Westmoreland County man who allegedly led police on a chase in Indiana County in November is due for a preliminary hearing today.
34-year-old Terry Ely, Jr. of Westmoreland City, is facing four counts of reckless endangerment, two counts of accidents involving death or injury and DUI, and single counts of felony theft, flight to avoid apprehension, along with drug-related crimes and summary driving charges connected with an incident on November 5th. Troopers tried to pull over Ely on Route 119 in Center Township after learning that he was wanted on a charge of driving on a suspended license. He fled onto old route 119, and after troopers lost sight of him, they found Ely involved in a three-vehicle crash near Lockard Avenue Extension. After he fled the crash scene, Ely stole an unlocked dump truck to continue his escape, but police were able to follow it thanks to a tracking device on the truck. Ely was found in the male passenger’s home in Indiana Borough. He was taken into custody without incident and placed in Indiana County Jail.
This marks the fourth attempt at a preliminary hearing, as three others were continued. He remains in Indiana County Jail on $50,000 bail.
