The Municipal Authority of Westmoreland County has lifted its mandatory water conservation order for those served by the Beaver Run Reservoir, which includes part of Westmoreland and Indiana Counties.
The order has been in place since mid-December, asking customers to cut water usage by 5-10%as the area had seen drought-like conditions that caused the water levels in the reservoir to drop. The lack of precipitation was blamed for the lower-than-normal water levels. But since January 9th, the water levels have gone back up by six feet. Authority officials measured 4.77 inches of new precipitation at the reservoir’s George R. Sweeney Water Treatment Plant. That snow and rain added more than 1.6 billion gallons of water into the reservoir this month.
The authority is continuing to call on voluntary conservation efforts as the reservoir still remains close to seven feet below where it was at the end of last January. Authority manager said that there is still a long way to go as far as getting the water levels back to normal, but the progress over the month of January is a good start.
