The Penguins’ Marcus Pettersson scored on a 2-on-1 rush at 2:43 of overtime for a 3-2 squeaker over Montreal at PPG Paints Arena on Saturday night.
Montreal took a 1-0 lead in the game at the 15:53 mark of the first period on a goals by defenseman Kaiden Guhle, but the Pens’ Lars Eller, playing in his 1,000th NHL game, buried a rebound at 4:05 of the second period to tie it. The Canadiens retook the lead on a goal credited to Juraj Slafkovsky, the last man to touch the puck before it deflected off the leg of Penguins defenseman Ryan Graves. Then Jake Guentzel converted a spectacular spin-a-rama backhand no-look pass from Sidney Crosby into the net at 10:03 of the third period to tie the game at two.
Pettersson’s goal in OT came on a breakaway with Rickard Rakell, as the Pens defenseman rocketed a wrist shot past Montreal goaltender Jake Allen.
The Pens won’t play again until February 6, when they will host Winnipeg, as they enter into the All-Star break.
