BOYS BASKETBALL
River Valley solidified its grip on the Heritage Conference West with a win at Homer-Center last night. Todd Marino has the recap.
In a first-place showdown for the top of the Heritage East, Conemaugh Township nipped Conemaugh Valley, 60-57 as a last-second Blue Jays three-pointer just missed. The Indians are 12-0 in the East and the Blue Jays fall to 11-2. Jon Updyke led the way for CT with 21 points. Conemaugh Valley was playing without leading scorer Jeremy Dietz. They were led by Landon Percinsky with 21.
United’s Dmitri Worthington scored 18 points, Ryan Felix 16, and Carter Payne 11, offsetting a 34-point performance by Northern Cambria’s Ty Dumm as the Lions beat the Colts, 55-52.
Penns Manor clobbered Purchase Line, 61-26.
Portage eased by Cambria Heights, 68-34.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Portage topped Homer-Center, 54-33. Jenna Burkett led the Mustangs with 15 points and Cami Burkett added 13. Homer-Center’s Alaina Fabin scored 11.
WRESTLING
Indiana closed out the regular dual meet season with Senior Salute and celebrated by blowing out section for Valley 66-9. Winners on the mat with falls were Connor Sevajian, Carter Putt, Nico Fanella, and Tuscan Blystone. Winners by decision were Will Turner and Dominic Fanella, who had the match of the night, beating highly-ranked Charles Perkins 2-1.
United downed Conemaugh Township, 48-23. Winners by fall were the Lions’ Gideon Bracken, Colton Henning, Caden McCully, Dylan Stevens, and Jacob Sombronski.
River Valley beat West Shamokin, 58-18. The Panthers’ Joel Micklow, Chris Clawson, Kaden Barnhart, Jack Rummel, Chase Stuchal, and Michael Wano all won by fall. Eli Morcheid and Nathan Morcheid won by technical fall.
SWIMMING
Two close meets for the Homer-Center swim teams last night at IUP. The Wildcats’ girls edged Cambria Heights, 86-84, while the boys won, 71-64.
Homer-Center’s girls won 8 of 10 events, including multiple victories by Vanessa Uher, Morgan Nagy, Ava King, and Grace Frazer. Those four also won the 200 medley relay and King, Frazer, Nagy, and Alaina Bell won the 200 freestyle relay.
For the boys, the Wildcats’ Trevor Cameron and Brady Frazer were double-winners and Dan Jones won one individual event and teamed up with Cameron, Frazer, and Landon Shoup to win the 200 free relay.
RELEASE BY HOMER-CENTER SWIM:
The Homer-Center Wildcat Swim Teams hosted the Cambria Heights Highlanders on Wednesday, January 24, 2024, at IUP’s John A. Pidgeon Natatorium. In a full team effort, the Wildcat Girls narrowly beat the Highlanders by only two points, winning 86 to 84. The boys also picked up another season victory, winning 71 to 64.
The girls were dominant, winning ten of eleven events. First-place finishes were earned by Vanessa Uher in the 50 and 100 freestyle, Morgan Nagy in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle, Ava King in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke, and Grace Frazer in the 200 IM and 500 freestyle. These four girls combined to win the 200 medley relay. King, Frazer, Nagy, and Alaina Bell won the 200 Freestyle Relay.
The boys also had several first-place finishes. Trevor Cameron won the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke. Brady Frazer was another double winner in the 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke. Dan Jones won the 100 freestyle with a best time. The 200 freestyle relay team of Cameron, Frazer, Jones, and Landon Shoup also placed first.
Multiple time drops and unexpected second and third-place finishes were contributing factors in today’s victory. This team continues to improve. A total of 110.91 seconds of time drops were recorded during the meet. Our biggest time drops came from Dani Uher and Natalia (Tilly) Thomas, both in the 500 freestyle. Dani dropped 14.93 seconds and Tilly dropped an astounding 32.47 seconds.
The full “time drop” list includes 14 of our 20 swimmers that competed at the meet. We also had swimmers achieve qualifying times for the District VI Swimming and Diving Championship held next month at Penn State. Vanessa Uher qualified for the 100 freestyle and Landon Shoup qualified in the 200 IM.
The Homer-Center Wildcat swimmers will host their last dual meet of the season this Monday night, January 29, 2024. It’s our senior night! Seniors Grace Frazer, Ciara Richards, and Alivia Stambolia will be recognized for their dedication to the Wildcat Swim Team.

A big Heritage Conference West girls matchup highlights the schedule tonight. Penns Manor will host Marion Center on 92.5 FM U92. The Stingers are 10-2 and in first place on The Road to the KCAC, with the Comets and River Valley both just behind, at 9-2.
There is Renda Digital TV coverage tonight of Indiana hockey, which will host North Catholic. We’ll be on the air at around 7:15.
