A planned merger between Spirit Airlines and JetBlue Airways was rejected by a federal judge on Tuesday.
The Florida-based low-cost airline that serves Arnold Palmer Regional Airport among others was the subject of an acquisition deal initiated by JetBlue, the sixth-largest airline in terms of revenue. The federal judge said that the merger would substantially lessen competition and would violate federal anti-trust laws. JetBlue says that they plan to appeal the Judge’s decision.
Westmoreland County Airport Authority Executive Director Gabe Monzo said that he was optimistic for the future of Spirit and the airport and they will be ready to support Spirit Airlines as they have done in the past.
Spirit currently flies from Latrobe to Orlando, Florida year-round and offers seasonal trips to Myrtle Beach in the summer months.
