State police have released their statistics from the New Year’s holiday enforcement period. Troopers saw a significant decrease in the number of total crashes, but they also report a spike in fatal crashes during the three-day period.
Between Dec. 30 and Jan. 1, troopers say they investigated five fatal crashes across Pennsylvania that killed five people, one crash was alcohol related. They also investigated 336 total crashes that left 68 injured. Among them, 47 were alcohol related. At this time last year, troopers investigated zero fatal crashes and 481 total wrecks.
Troopers made 326 DUI arrests, a decrease of 30 from the year before, and issued 3,833 speeding citations, 56 child safety seat citations, 344 seatbelt citations, and 8,125 other citations.
In Troop A, which covers Indiana, Westmoreland, Cambria and Somerset counties, troopers investigated 26 total crashes, none of which were fatal, but four were alcohol related. They also made 17 DUI arrests and issued 218 speeding citations.
