A man from Lancaster County is now in prison in Westmoreland County for firing shots at Arnold Palmer Regional Airport and leading police on a chase that ended in Blairsville on Friday.
Police say 22-year-old Tyler Mieczkowski went to the airport near Latrobe and fired shots into the windshield of a box truck that was leaving the airport after making a delivery around 1:15 PM. The driver of the truck was not hurt in the shooting but was able to call police and give them a description of the shooter and the car he was driving. Westmoreland County Park Police Captain Jeff Shearer said that the suspect was found within minutes of the vehicle’s description being released to other police forces.
The car crashed on North Walnut Street after running over a spike strip set up by state police. Mieczkowski was apprehended after he tried to flee on foot.
Westmoreland County Park Police were assisted by the State Police, Blairsville and Black Lick fire departments, and police from Latrobe, Derry and Blairsville.
Mieczkowski faces charges of reckless endangerment, aggravated assault and fleeing or eluding police. Bail was denied, so he will remain in jail until his preliminary hearing on January 8th.
