Starting on January 1st, drivers will see a little relief at the gas pumps, as taxes on gas and diesel fuel will go down.
PennDOT says that the gas tax will go down 3.5 cents at the start of the new year to 57.6 cents a gallon. The tax on diesel will see a similar drop, as it will go down 4.4 cents to 74.1 cents a gallon. The gas tax is used to collect revenue that is mostly used to pay for maintaining and improving Pennsylvania’s infrastructure, and hundreds of millions also going towards the state police. That may end though as Governor Josh Shapiro and other state lawmakers approved freeing up $125 million in gas tax revenue by moving the state law enforcement expenses to the budget. The money would also go towards roads and bridges.
The tax is applied to wholesalers and is paired with a federal gas tax of 18.4 cents per gallon.
