Efforts are underway to recycle live Christmas trees that were used by families this holiday season.
The Indiana County Solid Waste Authority usually accepts Christmas trees between now and mid-February to be recycled by the county. Many of the trees are chipped and used for mulch in Indiana County parks and gardens, while in other parts of the county, used live trees are utilized to form sand and soil erosion barriers on beaches and river beds. Used trees can also be sunk in ponds to provide hunting and feeding places for fish and other aquatic life.
People are reminded that the trees must be brought to the recycling center in Homer City, and must be free of decorations, wires, hooks. Bags must be removed when the tree is dropped off. This is a drop-off recycling effort only and trees will not be picked up curbside.
