The Penguins looked to their captain again last night and Sidney Crosby did not let them down. Sidney Crosby scored the Penguins’ lone goal in regulation time and fired a laser wrister past Carolina goaltender Pyotr Kochetkov for the game-winning goal in a shootout as the Pens downed the Hurricanes, 2-1.
Crosby redirected a Jake Guentzel feed into the net to open the scoring in the first period, but the ‘Canes tied it in the second when a rebound of a shot by Teuvo Teranainen deflected off Kris Letang’s skate into the net past Alex Nedeljkovic. That was the only shot out of 24 that got by Nedeljkovic, who earned his third straight win.
Crosby’s winning wrist shot was the only goal of the shootout. Nedeljkovic stopped attempts by Carolina’s Stefan Noesen, Andrei Svechnikov, and Teravainen. The Pens’ Rockard Rakell and Letang were also stopped on their shootout attempts.
Coach Mike Sullivan said the Penguins took care of the puck against the stifling pressure defense of the Hurricanes.
Sullivan loved the way Nedeljkovic controlled the Hurricanes’ attack by limiting second chances.
A key moment in the game came when the Penguins’ penalty kill was called upon at the 15:18 mark of the third period after Erik Karlsson took a holding penalty. They allowed only one shot on goal. The coach says the pk unit went to work.
Sidney Crosby says the extra point earned with the shootout win is important.
Next up for the Penguins is a game tomorrow night against the Senators in Ottawa. We’re on the air on 92.5 FM U92 at six o’clock.
