Pirates General Manager Ben Cherington enters Christmas weekend with a few things on his wish list, including more starting pitching, a veteran catcher with starting experience in the big leagues, and he said on Wednesday that he is looking for one more position player, preferably one who can play at multiple spots.
Various sources have reported that the Bucs have shown interest in trading for White Sox right-handed starting pitcher Dylan Cease, as well as a trade for Reds second baseman Jonathan India, and a possible free agent deal with ex-Bucco All-Star Adam Frazier.
Pitcher Roddery Munoz has been traded to the Marlins for cash considerations. He never played for the Pirates after arriving on a waiver claim this offseason.
Pitcher Andre Jackson was designated for assignment in order to make room for Andrew McCutchen on the 40-man roster. Jackson is reported to have a deal in place to play in Japan in 2024.
Former Diamondbacks All-Star infielder Jake Lamb has signed a minor league deal with the Pirates. He’s a ten-year MLB veteran who hit .216 with two home runs in 51 at-bats for the Angels in 2023.
Former Pirates prospect Travis Swaggerty has signed a minor league deal with the Dodgers. The tenth overall pick in the 2018 draft was released by the Bucs in August after getting only nine Major League at-bats in his Pirates career. He signed with the White Sox but never appeared in any games in that organization and was released after the season.

The Dodgers’ spending spree continued yesterday when they reached a contract agreement with the hottest foreign star on the market. Japanese right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto will sign a 12-year contract worth $325 million, the largest contract for a pitcher in Major League Baseball history. He’s won three straight MVP awards in the Nippon Professional Baseball league.
Major League Baseball is taking away two seconds from the pitch clock when runners are on base. The time has been trimmed from 20 seconds to 18. Mound visits from the bench have been reduced from five per game to four, and the home-to-first basepath has been widened.
