Andrew McCutchen says he wants to retire as a Pirate, but he’s still got some good baseball left in him. The veteran signed a second straight one-year $5 million contract to remain with the Buccos and play another season.
Coming off a season shortened by a partially torn Achilles tendon, Cutch says he is healthy and he hopes that will help him play more consistently in 2024.
General Manager Ben Cherington says whether McCutchen actually can get back to playing in the field, or is strictly a DH, he is a great presence on and off the field.
Cherington says Cutch “doesn’t want to be a hood ornament”, but wants to be a valuable part of the Pirates’ lineup, and the Bucs feel he can be.
