It wasn’t going well for the Penguins last night, playing for the second straight night and falling behind two goals to the Montreal Canadiens. But then Sidney Crosby led them back and the Pens got an incredible shootout win. Paul Steigerwald has the remarkable story.
The Pens’ two power play goals were both scored by Sidney Crosby, and Crosby assisted on Jake Guentzel’s goal. In the shootout, the Pens got goals by Kris Letang, Crosby, Lars Eller, and Harkins.
Coach Mike Sullivan says getting wins on back-to-back nights is a tribute to the Penguins’ “stick-to-it-iveness”.
Sullivan says the power play has been great the last two games, but it’s still not near what it could be.
With two goals and an assist last night, Sidney Crosby continues to carry the Penguins. Sullivan says he sets an example for his teammates with his play on the ice more than with his words.
Jansen Harkins was thrilled to get the win in front of his father, who along with other dads has accompanied the team on the road trip. He said he remembered his dad’s advice for the shootout…no dekes, just shoot the puck.
In the shootout, the Canadiens had three misses and Penguins goaltender Alex Ndeljkovic made seven saves, including stopping the final six shots in a row.
Nedeljkovic says shootouts are fun, especially if he’s shutting the door.
The Pens will be in Toronto on Saturday night.
Hockey Canada yesterday announced its 22-player roster for the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championships and Penguins top draft pick Brayden Yager is on the list. Yager has 17 goals and 24 assists so far for Moose Jaw of the Western Hockey League.
The tournament gets underway on December 26th in Sweden.
