The state Public Utility Commission has approved the merger of Metropolitan Edison, Penelec, Penn Power, and West Penn Power into a single entity to be known as FirstEnergy Pennsylvania Electric Company. The company will have five rate districts – this region will be the Penelec Rate District – and each district will continue its current rate structure until a future rate case filing by FE PA, which is the acronym the company will use.
The company intends to unify its rates moving forward, but the change will be gradual. The settlement with the PUC requires that unification occur over three rate changes filed on or after January 1st of 2025, or over ten years, whichever comes first. FE PA must also track its savings in operating expenses created by the mergers and channel them back to ratepayers.
