Another special meeting has been scheduled by the Indiana County Commissioners to consider the preliminary budget for 2024.
The budget has been a frustrating one for the county commissioners, as two draft budget proposals submitted in mid-November and last week failed to pass due to a lack of a second. Tax increases were reported in both budgets, with the first budget proposing a 1.7 mill tax increase and the second proposing a 1.19 mill increase. On both occasions, Commissioners Chairman Mike Keith made a motion to pass the budget, but it failed to garner a second from either Commissioner Robin Gorman or Sherene Hess.
During last Friday’s special meeting, Gorman stated that if the Commissioners failed to pass a final budget by the end of the year, the county government would shut down except for essential services. The chief concern is to either cut services or to increase taxes, with Hess saying that in the current financial times, people would be severely impacted with a tax increase.
The meeting will be held this Friday at 10:30 AM at the Commissioners Meeting Room at the County Courthouse. It is open to the public. If the budget passes, it needs to be on display for 20 days. The commissioners have also re-scheduled their second special meeting for December 29th at 10:30 AM. Their regularly scheduled meeting for December 13th is still on schedule.
