His coaching journey has taken Curt Cignetti to Indiana once again, but it’s a different Indiana. The former IUP head football coach yesterday was hired by Indiana University, leaving James Madison to become the 30th coach in Hoosiers football history.
Cignetti’s five-year tenure at James Madison included an 11-1 record this year and an overall mark of 52-9. He was the Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year this season. The 62-year-old will coach the Dukes in their bowl game, but they are ineligible for the Sun belt Conference championship this weekend.
Cignetti has coached college football for 41 seasons. At IUP, he was 119-35 in thirteen seasons. He left IUP for Elon University in 2017, going 14-9 there, and became head coach at James Madison in 2019.
In a statement released by IU, Cignetti said he was “…excited to lead this program forward and change the culture, mindset, and expectation level of Hoosier football.”
