With a game tonight in Tampa Bay, Penguins coach Mike Sullivan continues to look for answers on the power play. Yesterday, he had center Lars Eller working with the second unit, replacing Radim Zohorna. The Pens are 0-for-20 with the man advantage over the last eight games. Sullivan says Eller has the skills and experience to work the power play, and he helps ease the burden for some of his teammates.
One of the more puzzling aspects of the Penguins’ season so far has been that such a talented team has faced more power plays than they’ve had. The Pens have had the extra man 58 times and have a 12.07 percent success rate, placing them 26th in the NHL. They’ve had to kill penalties 66 times, with an 86.36 percent success rate, which is sixth in the league. Sullivan says they are not pressuring teams to commit penalties.
Forward Alex Nylander was sent to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton yesterday. Defenseman Will Butcher cleared waivers but is not yet assigned to the minors. He’s currently listed as “injured non-roster” with an undisclosed ailment.
Faceoff tonight in Tampa is scheduled for shortly after 7 o’clock. The airtime on 92.5 FM U92 is at six.
