Reaction continues to come in concerning the news that Governor Josh Shapiro has appealed the Commonwealth Court ruling on the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, also known as RGGI.
The initiative to put a carbon emissions cap on coal fired power plants and have them buy credits to compensate for carbon emissions was put in place by an executive order from Governor Tom Wolf, but was declared unconstitutional earlier this month by Commonwealth Court, saying that RGGI was a tax, it could not be put in place by executive order and needed the approval of the state legislature.
State House Republican Jim Struzzi said he was disappointed in the decision by the Shapiro Administration, as he felt that Shapiro had an opportunity to right a wrong from Wolf.
As far as future negotiations and conversations on energy and environmental policy in the state legislature, Senator Joe Pittman said that those discussions have effectively stopped until the issue is cleared up.
The matter now goes to the State Supreme Court.
