During his weekly news conference, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin addressed the firing of former offensive coordinator Matt Canada.
Tomlin said it was his decision to fire Canada and, while it was difficult, it was necessary. He said the NFL is a “result-oriented business” and the Steelers’ improvements were not where he expected them to be at this point in the season, even calling the ongoing troubles quote, “September issues.”
Tomlin said running backs coach Eddie Faulkner will be the team’s offensive coordinator but the play-calling duties will go to quarterbacks coach Mike Sullivan, which presents a good opportunity for both to grow with the team.
In his 20 years coaching in the NFL, Sullivan has worked closely with several Pro Bowl players, including Eli Manning, Odell Beckham Jr., Vincent Jackson, Steve Smith, and Doug Martin.
Tomlin said he is excited to see what Sullivan can do with quarterback Kenny Pickett given his extensive resume.
Tomlin also said Pickett will remain the team’s starting quarterback heading into this Sunday’s game against AFC North rival Cincinnati.
The Steelers also signed former Packers linebacker Henry Black to the practice squad and released linebacker Tyler Murray.
Black has 27 tackles, one interception and one forced fumble in 25 games.
