The Penguins had a 1-0 lead over Carolina last night, but two third period goals by the Canes broke a 2-2 tie and led to a fifth straight loss to the Pens’ Metro Division rivals.
Sidney Crosby scored both Penguins’ goals, one in the first period and one in the third, both on backhanders while parked to the right of the goal mouth.
Sebastian Aho tied the game for the Hurricanes with a second period goal and defenseman Brent Burns blasted a slap shot past Tristan Jarry for the go-ahead goal in the third before Crosby’s second goal. Crosby scored off a rebound after Kris Letang’s slap shot. Letang collected an assist for his 700th career NHL point.
Carolina’s Seth Jarvis tapped in the game-winner at 11:52 of the third and he then scored the empty-netter at 19:22.
The Penguins play defending Stanley Cub champion Vergas at PPG Paints Arena tonight, facing off at 6 PM. The pregame will be on 92.5 FM U92 at 5:00.
