The IUP women were tied, 57-57, with Fairmont State after three quarters last night, but the Falcons sprinted away in the final quarter with a 21-7 advantage for a 78-64 win, handing IUP its first loss. Rahmena Henderson led the Crimson Hawks with 18 points, Nyshae’ Weaver had 17 and Grace Centrulla 10.
IUP’s women’s team will travel to Goldey Beacom in Delaware on Saturday.
IUP’s men’s basketball team is back in action tonight for the first time since Saturday’s win over Notre Dame of Ohio. The 1-1 Crimson Hawks face a stiff test in Walsh University, which beat Division One Oakland in an exhibition last month and started their regular season with a win over Grand Valley State on Saturday. They shot 61.9 percent from beyond the three-point arc in that game, hitting fifteen threes.
Coach Joe Lombardi says IUP’s defense will be tested, and the offense is going to have to respond.
Lombardi says Walsh is good, as is next week’s opponent in the IRMC Thanksgiving Classic, but IUP will grow from the tough schedule.
IUP is 2-1 all-time against Walsh, including a 74-60 win by the Crimson Hawks last season. It’s a 7:45 airtime, 8 o’clock tipoff from the KCAC on 92.5 FM U92.
