On MLB Network’s “Hot Stove” program yesterday, Pirates general manager Ben Cherington offered some insight into the Bucs’ offseason, and he anticipates he’ll be very active in the free agent marketplace.
Cherington said the team still hopes to sign Andrew McCutchen for another season; he’s optimistic about the ankle rehabilitation of Oneil Cruz, who he said the team is hoping can get some on-field baseball games in this winter; and Henry Davis is spending his offseason training as a catcher, not an outfielder. The former top overall pick in the Major League draft played mostly outfield and designated hitter last season but Cherington envisions him sharing time with Endy Rodriguez behind the plate.
Cherington also said the Pirates’ young pitching prospects might not be ready for the big leagues in the first three months of next season, but the Pirates will definitely need them. Specifically speaking of last year’s top overall choice, the GM said Paul Skenes is working in Bradenton right now and will be in the Major League camp, but his work in spring training will determine where he ends up next year. He said the Bucs won’t rush Skenes to the majors.
ARIZONA FALL LEAGUE
Despite a home run by Pirates prospect Jack Branigan, the Salt River Rafters lost to Peoria, 10-8 yesterday, bringing an end to their season in the Arizona Fall League. Jase Bowen, another Pirates prospect, had a hit in the game. Peoria advances to a play-in game today against Scottsdale for the right to play first-place Surprise for the league championship on Sunday.
Branigan and Bowen led the Rafters in home runs with four each.
