The Penguins will fly to California to take on the San Jose Sharks tomorrow night on their first West Coast road trip of the season. Yesterday, a number of players were wearing neck guards during practice in Cranberry.
Erik Karlsson, Lars Eller, Ryan Graves, and Markus Pettersson all wore the guards, after the death last Sunday of former Penguins forward Adam Johnson, who suffered a lacerated neck in a game in the United Kingdom.
The Penguins have mandated neck guards for their Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and Wheeling minor league teams, but at the NHL level, it cannot be mandated unless the players’ union approves. The team will strongly suggest it though, according to coach Mike Sullivan.
Pens/Sharks tomorrow night faces off at 10 PM, with the airtime on U92 at 9.
