Following the untimely death of former center Adam Johnson over the weekend, the Penguins are exploring ways to add more protective equipment in games.
Reports say several Penguins players are open to wearing more protective equipment around players’ necks, and that the Washington Capitals and Boston Bruins are two teams that are also considering wearing neck guards in practice.
Coach Mike Sullivan commented on the matter following yesterday’s practice. He said he and General Manager Kyle Dubas have talked on this matter and change is being implemented with the team’s AHL and ECHL affiliates.
Players will have the option to wear protective equipment in games as teams cannot mandate equipment rules at the NHL level.
The Penguins will have a few days off before heading to the west coast this weekend to start a three-game series.
